The simple approaches presented here are straw-man simplifications, as most games use some combination of these approaches. Some such combinations seem to produce new approaches of their own.
Sometimes many possible actions or puzzles are available within an area of the game. Yet, only be solving the necessary tasks or puzzles can the player advance to the next area. In this way, each stage has an Open structure. But these open stages are connected to form, at a higher level, a linear puzzle chain. Crawford refers to this structure as the "journey structure", as moving from stage to stage often means also moving to a new geographical location within the game.
